South America tapir (Tapirus terrestris) swimming with a bird on its snout. This is a herbivorous mammal that is found near rivers in the tropical rainforests of South America. It is an excellent swimmer. It often takes waterbaths and mudbaths to rid itself of parasites,a function that the bird may also be performing. A tapir browses a wide range of plants, mostly eating seedlings and shoots. It reaches over 2 metres in length. Photographed in Reid Park Zoo,Tucson,Arizona,USA | |
