Female chacma baboon (Papio ursinus) during oestrus, the one week period during each month that adult female baboons are sexually receptive. The chacma baboon lives in large troops which can contain over 100 individuals. It inhabits the savanna and scrubland of southern Africa. A troop is led by dominant males, and a strict and complex hierarchy exists. The chacma baboon mainly eats plant matter, but small monkeys, young gazelles and eggs are taken on occasion. It is among the largest of the baboons. Photographed in the Mkuzi Game Reserve,South Africa | |
