Mole hill. The mole (family: Talpidae) is a mammal that lives in soil. It uses its broad paws to excavate tunnels and burrows. Waste earth is piled above the ground as mole hills, such as the one seen here. A mole is active both day and night, feeding on worms and insects that drop into its tunnels. Moles can cause a great deal of damage to lawns and gardens. Photographed in a garden in Mossel Bay,South Africa | |
