Blue and yellow macaw (Ara ararauna). Macaws are the largest members of the parrot family. A. ararauna measures 90 centimetres in length. It inhabits riverside forests and open savannahs and is widely distributed in South America, mainly within the Amazon basin. It feeds on palm fruits, nuts and seeds. A. ararauna is one of the most common parrots to be kept as pets,a factor that has contributed to their decline in the wild. Photographed in South Africa | |
