Kelp gull (Larus dominicanus vetula),or southern black-backed gull,on a guano-stained rock. This African kelp gull, considered distinct from kelp gulls found elsewhere in the world,is found on the coastline of southern Africa. This scavenging seabird feeds on rubbish and dead fish. It also preys on the young of other seabirds such as penguins. It is an aggressive bird with a loud mewing call. Gulls range from 30-60 centimetres in length, with the kelp gull being one of the larger gulls. Photographed in Tsitsikamma National Park,South Africa | |
