European eagle owl (Bubo bubo). This owl is the largest owl in the world, with a wingspan of up to 2 metres. It had not been seen in the wild in the UK for 200 years until a breeding pair was discovered in England in 1997. Since then, the bird has been seen in increasing numbers in the wild. It is not usually considered to be a native bird of the British Isles, though this is a contentious issue. Some people fear that if the bird becomes common in the wild they may begin preying on lambs and pets | |
