Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) wading in a reed bed. This water bird inhabits marches and wetlands in Europe. It feeds on frogs,water insects and other small invertebrates. It is a large bird and can reach a length of up to 80 centimetres. It is known for the booming calls of the male,which can be heard many kilometres away.
