Blue mussel. Hand holding a blue mussel,Mytilus edulis, whose shells have been prised apart. Mussels are bivalves which means that they have two shells which are hinged on one side. Sea mussels are commonly found in clusters attached to shoreline rocks. Mussels are filter feeders, sifting water and extracting tiny particles of food. Mussel meat is tasty and contains a high percentage of vitamins, protein and minerals. If they are not cooked correctly, mussels can be a source of food poisoning. This occurs with shellfish which come from contaminated water. Photographed on Vancouver Island,Canada | |
