Euglena protozoan (Euglena sp.),coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This protozoan is described as flagellate because it has a flagellum (thin tail-like structure, lower centre) that is waved to move it through the surrounding liquid. Protozoa are single-celled (unicellular) micro- organisms that are eukaryotes, meaning they have a cell nucleus. Euglena is photosynthetic,so it uses the energy of sunlight to synthesise food. An eyespot at the front of the cell is sensitive to light, allowing it to move towards sunlight. It can also feed on other micro-organisms. Euglena protozoa vary in length from 50-100 micrometres (millionths of a metre) | |
