Firefighter using a hose pipe to put out a fire. The fireman on the right is wearing a helmet that has an infrared camera built into it. All objects give off a certain amount of heat in the form of infrared radiation. This camera converts the radiation into a visible light picture, using different colours to show different temperatures. The camera does not need visible light to operate and so can be used in very smokey conditions,or in the dark. Firemen use the cameras to find victims trapped by fires and also to find the source of the fire. Photographed in London | |
