Micromotor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a chain of micromotor gears (yellow, green, blue, purple, red). Each gear is smaller in diameter than a human hair and 100 times thinner than a sheet of paper. The chain is driven by a pair of electric microengines (not visible) connected to the drive gear (yellow). The whole device, called a micromotor, was etched into the surface of a silicon wafer by the same methods used to make silicon chips. Micromotors could one day be used in exotic nanotechnology applications such as microscopic drug pumps implanted in the human body. Magnification: x260 at 5x7cm size.
