Fish-eye overall view of the ZT-40M Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) fusion device at Los Alamos National Laboratory,New Mexico. The RFP is used to study the generation of power through nuclear fusion by magnetic containment. The ring-shaped vessel uses currents of up to 600,000 amps to generate magnetic fields that confine and heat a plasma (a hot ionized gas) to temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius. In order to harvest such heat energy for power generation,a stable plasma temperature must be maintained for a sufficiently long period.
