Nuclear winter. Image 5 of 5. Artwork of the Earth after a nuclear war. The amount of dust thrown up by the explosions has completely blacked out the Earth. Only the polar regions are free of dust. Dust and smoke caused by the explosions and fires would block some of the Sun's heat and light, leading to a "nuclear winter". This could lower global temperatures by up to 10 degrees Celsius. This would cause the deaths of countless animals and plants,as well as humans and their crops. For a sequence showing the progression of a nuclear winter, see images T165/115-119 | |
