Starburst galaxy NGC 1313,Hubble Space Telescope image. This galaxy,50,000 light years across, has high levels of star formation. It is a barred spiral galaxy, the centre of which is seen here. The bar is running vertically down centre, and the spiral arms are emerging from the ends of the bar at upper left and lower right. This image was used to survey young stars (green),which are scattered throughout the galaxy. This indicates that the star clusters where these stars form break apart very quickly. This galaxy is 14 million light years from Earth,in the constellation Reticulum. This image was obtained with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument. The results were published in January 2007 | |
