The Milky Way centre. Map of an area 1000 light years across centred on the core of our Milky Way galaxy. The bright source at centre is Sagittarius A,which coincides with the galaxy's core. At its very centre is Sagittarius A*,which probably houses a black hole weighing about 3 million solar masses. The galaxy's centre is surrounded by a ring of gas (pink) whose emission was detected in the radio waveband. The outer ring is formed by molecular clouds (orange),and clouds of neutral hydrogen (yellow) and ionised hydrogen (pink). The Henbest/Baum galaxy map is based on the locations of 1500 bright stars, nebulae and other objects | |
