The Local Arm. Map of the Local,or Orion, spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. The Local Arm stretches from the constellation of Cygnus (right) to Vela. The Sun is in the small bubble of gas at centre right. Swirls of gas and dust mark the Local Arm: molecular clouds are orange, diffuse clouds of neutral hydrogen are yellow, nebulae formed by ionised hydrogen are pink. Blue giant stars are shown as blue circles with white cores. The pink ring at centre right is the Gum Nebula,a gas bubble 800 light years across. The Henbest/Baum galaxy map is based on the locations of 1500 bright stars, nebulae and other objects | |
