Milky Way (first of six images). Southern Milky Way centred on the constellation of Sagittarius, the first of six images which make up a survey of the Milky Way. This image shows the dense star clouds in one of the most densely populated regions of our galaxy. It is characterised by several emission nebulae (pink/red patches),star clusters and dark nebulae. Emission nebulae are clouds of gas, mainly hydrogen which are ionised and lit up by nearby hot stars. At top centre are the nebulae M16 and M17 (these appear at the bottom of photograph R800/129).
