Gum nebula. Enhanced optical image of the Gum nebula, the largest nebula in the sky. It is about 60 moon widths across. At centre is the Vela Supe- rnova Remnant (green wisps),glowing gas which is the remains of a star which ended its life in a supernova explosion about 11,000 years ago. The energy released by the supernova is thought to be the main power source for the Gum nebula. Three bright stars are visible here: Lambda Velorum (far left),Zeta Puppis (upper right) and Gamma Velorum (lower right). This image was produced by a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera, which stores images electronically rather than on film | |
