Tarantula nebula and supernova 1987A. True-colour optical image of the Tarantula nebula (NGC 2070,30 Doradonis, upper centre) and smaller nebulae the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Supernova 1987A is the bright star-like point to the lower right of the Tarantula nebula. The LMC is a small galaxy which lies about 170,000 light years away. The Tarantula nebula,an enormous area of glowing hydrogen gas,is one of the largest nebulae known. Supernova 1987A became visible as a giant star exploded at the end of its life. It provided valuable data about star death. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light | |
