Crux constellation. This southern constellation is known as the Southern Cross. Just below and left of Crux, there is a dark patch silhouetted against the bright Milky Way. This is a foreground dust cloud called the Coal Sack. The bright stars to its left are Alpha Centauri (left) and Hadar (or Beta Centauri, right) in the neighbouring constellation Centaurus. The Milky Way passes through these constellations, and is studded with numerous nebulae (red) and star clusters | |
