The constellation of Virgo (lower centre) and surrounding spring constellations of the northern hemisphere. Virgo is a large constellation which covers 1294 square degrees of sky. It has a few bright stars,the brightest being Spica (bottom centre),the 16th brightest star in the sky. Virgo is also known as the "Realm of the Nebulae",a term coined by the astronomer Edwin Hubble in the 1920s; it describes the Virgo galaxy cluster (centre right,not seen here),a cluster containing several thousand galaxies.
