Sun's "quiet" corona. Coloured ultraviolet TRACE satellite image of a "quiet" part of the sun's corona. The corona is the hot outer atmosphere of the sun. In this image,a plasma of highly ionised iron atoms at temperatures of around 1 million degrees Celsius are visible. The corona is fairly uniform with no regions of more vigorous plasma which result from magnetic activity derived from the solar surface. TRACE (Transition Region and Coronal Explorer) studies the relationship of magnetic fields to the plasma eruptions which sometimes affect Earth. This is one of TRACE's first images, taken on 5 May 1998 | |
