Total solar eclipse. Composite image of the Sun superimposed on an image of the Moon taken during the total solar eclipse of 11th August 1999. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun,and its shadow crosses the Earth. The white outer layer of the Sun (corona) is seen only during eclipses,as it is usually hidden by the glare from the surface of the Sun (photosphere, red). The Moon and Sun appear to be the same size when seen from Earth. The image of the Sun was taken from space by a telescope on board NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The Moon was photographed from Romania | |
