Total solar eclipse. Composite image of the Moon during a total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun,and the shadow of the Moon crosses the Earth. This can only occur during the new Moon phase in the lunar cycle. The Moon is gravitationally linked to Earth, and the same hemisphere faces us at all times. The diamond ring effect is seen here,in which the last part of the solar disc is seen shining through a valley on the Moon's limb. During a solar eclipse, the corona of the Sun (white) is seen. This is its outer atmosphere, and it is usually invisible due to the glare from the Sun's surface | |
