Solar eclipses. Composite time lapse images of a total solar eclipse (upper),a beaded eclipse (mi- ddle) & an annular eclipse (lower). Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. An annular eclipse occurs when the Earth is close to the Sun & far from the Moon. The disc of the Moon appears smaller than that of the Sun,so a ring (or annulus) of the Sun's surface is visible. When the Earth is further from the Sun and closer to the moon, some of the annulus is blocked, causing a beaded eclipse. When the Earth is far from the Sun & close to the Moon,a total eclipse occurs with only the Sun's outer atmosphere (corona, white) being visible | |
