| Sliced Sun at sunset. The slices are produced by layers of air with different refractivities which vary according to the temperature and density of a layer. Absorption and reddening of the light are two other effects visible at sunsets and sunrises. At these times the light from the Sun must pass through an increasing mass of air which causes the Sun to dim. The reddening is caused by the particulate matter such as dust and aereosols suspended in the atmosphere.
