Comet Hyakutake and Milky Way. Fisheye view showing Comet Hyakutake (top centre) and a large portion of our galaxy, the Milky Way,from the constellation of Sagittarius (top left) to Canis Major. Comet Hyakutake was one of the brightest comet to appear in the sky. Comet are bodies, mostly formed by water ice, with a diameter of a few kilometres and orbiting the Sun with usually highly elongated orbits. It is only when a comet approaches the Sun that the water ice vaporises to form a tail of gas and dust pointing away from the Sun.
