Comet passing near Earth,computer artwork. Comets form when distant bodies of ice and dust,left over from the formation of the solar system,have their orbits altered to pass near the Sun. The Sun's heat causes the ice to boil,forming a huge cloud (coma) around the icy body (now a cometary nucleus). The solar wind blows the coma into a tail,pointing away from the Sun. It is rare for a cometary nucleus,only a few kilometres across,to hit Earth,but Earth has passed harmlessly through comet tails,as they can be millions of kilometres long. Cometary impacts were more frequent in the early history of Earth,and are thought to have contributed the water that formed Earth's oceans
