Arsia Mons volcano on Mars. Mars Global Surveyor image of a spiral of cloud (bright,centre) inside the caldera (crater) of the Arsia Mons volcano. The caldera of this huge volcano is 110 kilometres in diameter. The cloud is thought to have been largely made up of dust grains. The unusual formation may have formed by winds blowing around the inner walls of the caldera,or by a vortex formed as winds blew over the crater. The image was taken by the Mars Orbiter Camera on the MGS spacecraft in orbit around Mars,on 19th June 2001. This was the spring equinox in the Martian southern hemisphere | |
