Lunar crater Pythagoras, composite image. This image was taken by the AMIE camera on the European Space Agency's (ESA) SMART-1 probe. SMART-1 was launched in 2004,when it began using its electric propulsion system (or ion engine) to perform increasingly elliptical orbits around the Earth, until it was captured by the Moon. In early January 2005 it began surveying the Moon. Amongst its tasks is looking for water ice in the Moon's polar regions, where the craters are free from the warming effects of the Sun | |
