Deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope from the space shuttle Discovery on 24 April,1990,during mission STS-31. The telescope is still attached to the shuttle via the remote manipulator arm (bottom). A solar panel, one of two which will provide power for the satellite,is about to be unrolled from the arm (brown) which protrudes towards the camera. The Space Telescope will be able to view objects 50 times fainter and 7 times further away than is possible with existing ground-based optical telescopes. It will also produce images of much higher resolution (detail) because they will not suffer the blurring effect of the Earth's turbulent atmosphere | |
