Artist's impression of NASA's Space Telescope, which, until the loss of Challenger, was due for launch on the Shuttle in late 1986. With the Space Telescope, astronomers will be able to observe 300 times the volume of space now visible with the largest ground-based telescopes. In addition to being able to see fainter objects,Space Telescope will produce images of much higher resolution (detail) because they will not suffer the blurring effect of the Earth's atmosphere. The image shows the two solar panels which power the satellite and two antennae for transmitting and receiving data via the Tracking & Data Relay Satellite System | |
