Dark matter laboratory. Mine buildings at Boulby,North Yorkshire,England. The Boulby Underground Laboratory for Dark Matter Research is more than a kilometre below these buildings. The buildings are part of an active mine. Dark matter experiments are performed underground to shield the detectors from unwanted background radiation. Dark matter is the non-visible matter that is thought to make up most of the mass of the universe. Candidates for dark matter include exotic particles called weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). These will still penetrate underground. WIMP detectors have been used at Boulby before, but the laboratory was refurbished and reopened in 2003 | |
