UK Schmidt Telescope. Time-lapse image of the dome of the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (UKST) at Siding Spring,Australia. Star trails are seen in the night sky. Part of the optical telescope is seen inside. This telescope consists of a spherical primary mirror with a diameter of 1.8 metres and an achromatic correcting lens of 1.2 metres (50 inches). Schmidt telescopes are virtually free from light aberrations and are characterised by a large observational field. UKST covers about 40 square degrees of sky.
