Human sperm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two human sperm (also called spermatozoa) treated with buffer to make them disintegrate. The buffer has caused these sperm cells to lose their membrane and internal structures of both are seen. These sperm consist of a large round head which contains genetic material. The head of the sperm at lower left has almost totally disintegrated. The neck of each sperm contains many rounded mitochondria. These are the sites of respiration where energy is produced to move the long tail of each sperm. The cells are surrounded by seminal fluid.
