Breathing. Coloured X-ray showing exhalation. The horizontal bands are the ribs, enclosing the lungs (dark purple). The heart is the orange mass at centre, while the diaphragm divides the lungs and the abdominal cavity (light purple, lower centre). During exhalation the ribs move down and upwards, and the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards. This forces air out of the lungs and also pushes the heart upwards.
