Nerve cells. Light micrograph of a section through nerve cells (neurones) from the cerebral cortex of the brain. The cerebral cortex is composed of thousands of millions of neurones, and is responsible for memory, thought, intellect and for initiating voluntary movement. The section seen here is rich in pyramidal cells (small black circles),which have numerous dendrites trailing from one end of their cell body and one axon projecting from the other. The dendrites gather information for processing by the cell body, which is then relayed through the cell's axon. Stained using the Golgi-cox silver stain.
