False-colour scanning electron micrograph of two granulocytes in the peripheral blood system. Also seen are erythrocytes or red blood cells and a few platelets. Granulocytes are a class of white blood cells characterised by cytoplasmic granules & a single multilobed nucleus. All granulocytes are phagocytic, meaning they engulf & digest foreign materials entering the body. They are broken down into three classes according to the specific staining characteristics of their granules: neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils. Platelets, the tiny spiky objects, are involved in the arrest of bleeding. Magnification: x1435 at 35mm size | |
