Blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of white cells amongst red cells in human blood. Here, white blood cells (known as leucocytes) are coloured yellow. They are rounded cells with microvilli projections from the cell surface. Leucocytes play an important role in the immune response of the human body and form antibodies that protect against infection. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) have a characteristic biconcave-disc shape and no nucleus. These cells contain the pigment haemoglobin,a red pigment by which oxygen is transported around the body. There are many more red than white cells in the blood. Magnification x1,600 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x5000 at 8x10 inch size | |
