Femurs. Illustration of human femurs (thigh bones). The femur is the long bone between the hip and the knee. The head of the femur (top) articulates with the acetabulum of the hip, forming a ball and socket joint. The other two protruberances are the greater and lesser trochanters, where the gluteus major and psoas major muscles are attached. The lower end articulates with the knee joint at the lateral and medial condyles (knobs on either side of femur). The indented area between the condyles is the patellar surface, which houses the kneecap (patella). The femur is the largest and heaviest bone. It has a weak point at the neck | |
