Contraceptive pill action. Artwork of the method of action of the female oral contraceptive pill. The pill contains synthetic hormones that disrupt the normal functioning of the reproductive system. The hormones target the hypothalamus of the brain (blue, upper right),which stops the pituitary gland (red, below hypothalamus) releasing sex hormones. This prevents the monthly release of an egg from the ovaries (one seen, yellow oval at lower centre). The hormones also alter the lining of the uterus (lower right),preventing implantation should an egg be released. As well as this, the mucus (grey) of the cervix (dome, bottom right) is thickened to obstruct sperm | |
