Tooth cavity. Terahertz pulse images (TPI) of a tooth (left) with an internal cavity. This new type of imaging is safer than X-rays and gives extra diagnostic information. The image at centre shows areas of tooth enamel (yellow),and enamel and dentine (green). Three-dimensional images can be created by scanning the tooth with these pulsed terahertz (THz) waves. The internal cavity (pink) in the image at right can be identified due to the characteristic way in which it absorbs a THz wave. THz waves lie between infrared and microwaves in the electromagnetic spectrum. Developed at Toshiba Research Europe in Cambridge,England | |
