Eroded prosthetic knee joint. The tibial component of an artificial (prosthetic) knee joint, showing its eroded surface due to wear. The white surface seen here is plastic, with a metal base. The base is secured to the tibia (shin-bone) while the plastic surface forms the joint of articulation. Such severe wear of the prosthesis impairs knee movement and the component must be replaced. Knee joint surgery is usually performed on elderly patients with severe arthritis of the knee which causes pain and lack of movement. A knee joint prosthesis cannot withstand very vigorous activity and knee movement is somewhat limited | |
