MODEL RELEASED. Computer-aided neurosurgery. View of a technician preparing a patient for brain surgery by mapping his head. A 3-dimensional model of his brain is seen on the monitor at upper right, with the area to be operated on highlighted green. Here,a laser (red) scans the patient's head. LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are taped to his head to aid positioning. An image of the patient's brain is then superimposed on a live image of the patient's head during surgery. This facilitates the surgery, and reduces the risk of damaging healthy brain tissue during the excision of a tumour, for instance. This system was developed by Eric Grimson at MIT,USA | |
