Brain surgery robot. Neurosurgeon with a computer- controlled robot arm used in brain surgery. The robot arm is displayed within a human skull. The computer screen shows virtual reality images of the same device. This robot can be used by a brain surgeon to pinpoint diseased areas of the brain such as tumours. When the tip of the robotic arm is moved on the surface of a patient's head, the exact inner region requiring surgery can be visualised on the screen using CT (Computed Tomography) and 3-D MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Small tumours can be located and removed with minimal damage to other brain tissue. Photographed at the Besta Institute,Milan,Italy | |
