The female patient undergoing surgery is suffering from a low grade astrocytoma cancerous tumour,a type of glioma. The site of the tumour on the brain is seen on a video monitor (in the background). This type of astrocytoma is slow growing,but may spread widely throughout the brain. Surgery may be followed by both radio- therapy and chemotherapy.
