MODEL RELEASED. Perichondritis ear infection. Inflamed outer ear of a 61-year-old man suffering from perichondritis. This is a bacterial infection (usually with the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa) of the perichondrium,the tissue that surrounds the stiff cartilage in the ear. It usually follows a trauma (injury) to the ear or ear piercing,and results in a painful,swollen ear. Treatment is with antibiotics. In severe cases fluid may need to be drained from the ear surgically
