Pharyngitis. View of a red and inflamed throat. This is due to an infection with Streptococcus bacteria. The infection is known as pharyngitis. In addition to sore throat, there may be discomfort when swallowing, slight fever, earache and tender swollen lymph nodes in the neck. In more acute cases, fever may be high and the throat may swell so much that breathing becomes difficult. One potential complication is oedema (fluid) in the larynx (voice box) which is a life threatening condition. Treatment includes taking antibiotic medication; severe oedema of the larynx will necessitate a trachyoctomy or intubation | |
