Epilepsy. Coloured Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of the human brain in side view with a typical electroencephalogram (EEG) trace recorded during an epileptic seizure (fit). The white EEG trace shows electrical activity in the brain detected by electrodes placed on the patient's head. The wave traces are irregular and chaotic as occurs during an epileptic seizure when unregulated electrical discharges pass through the brain. Symptoms of epilepsy are sudden physical fits (seizures) or a loss of conscious- ness, depending on how much of the brain is affected. Treatment may include anticonvulsant drugs | |
