Cushing's syndrome. Light micrograph of a section through human adrenal gland tumours, causing Cushing's syndrome. The tumours (neoplasms) are benign (non-cancerous) adenomas. They cause the adrenal gland to over-produce cortisteroid hormones (micro-polyadenomatosis). The adenomas, upper centre and centre right, show multiple irregular-shaped cells, with large nuclei (pink). Symptoms of Cushing's syndrome include a moon- faced appearance, excess body and facial hair (especially in women),raised blood pressure and mental disturbances. Treatment requires the removal of the adrenal gland, followed by hormone replacement drugs. Magnification unknown | |
